CLN Regional Meetings, wrapped!
4 meetings, 33 organizations, lots of progress on the CLN 3.0 update!
At TOGETHER Bay Area, this summer wasn’t just popsicles and beach time! Instead, we made some really big progress with the Conservation Lands Network 3.0 Update by convening four different Regional Group Meetings across the Bay Area. Everyone who participated – from land acquisition project managers, to vegetation ecologists, to herpetologists, and more – came together to discuss how stewardship, fire and biodiversity are impacting Bay Area lands. The participants, representing 33 different organizations, provided recommendations, ideas, solutions, and constraints to discuss in more depth within the CLN 3.0 Report (like the CLN 2.0 Report or CLN 1.0 Report, both found here).
Why did we do this?
Land acquisition remains the primary objective of the CLN. And how we take care of the land (or not), what happens to the land (or doesn’t happen) are the questions we are looking to discuss further in the CLN 3.0 textbook. The textbook is the piece of the CLN’s suite of resources that can be richer in dialogue, more comprehensive in perspective, more applicable and accessible for partners to use beyond identifying priority lands.

What did we all talk about together?
For starters, we talked about communities being out of relationship with the land, that there is a disconnect between funding land for acquisition and the capacity and funding it takes to steward the land after the acquisition, and solutions to better manage data at a regional scale. After these meetings, these important issues will now be featured in the CLN’s 3.0 textbook in more comprehensive ways. We also shared what we love about Bay Area summers, with both Karl the Fog and stonefruit being widely loved.
We couldn’t have done it without our esteemed hosts: Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District, California Academy of Sciences, East Bay Municipal Utility District, and Petaluma River Park Foundation.
We are also extremely grateful for the State Coastal Conservancy as both the funder and such an integral partner to this project.
Lastly, can we do a shout out to the CLN 3.0’s Project Team? In partnership with TOGETHER, Redbud Resource Group, GreenInfo Network, Jodi McGraw Consulting, and Creekside Sciences are cranking out draft maps, engaging with Native communities, connecting with partners to collect data sources, and ensuring that the feedback we are getting along the way is integrated into this project.
This project takes an entire community in order to be successful, and the CLN 3.0 Update is well on its way because of our Regional Group Meeting hosts and participants, the Project Team, and all the CLN Participants.
